Landour is a small cantonment town just above Mussoorie in Uttarakhand, known for its colonial charm, pine-scented walks, and slow pace. Unlike its busier neighbour, it feels like a place frozen in time—perfect for travellers who want calm mountain days without the crowds.
Why Landour?
Landour sits about 7 km north of Mussoorie and retains much of its old-world character. The roads curve in a figure-eight pattern, with most attractions scattered along this loop, making it easy to explore on foot. You’ll find Gothic churches, heritage bakeries, tiny markets, and forest trails instead of malls and traffic jams.
Best Time to Visit
The most comfortable months are March to June and September to November, when skies are clear and temperatures are pleasant for walking. Monsoon (July–August) brings mist and lush greenery but some trails can be slippery. Winters (December–February) are cold and quiet; if you visit then, you might catch the famous “Winter Line” sunset from Lal Tibba.
Getting There
- By air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun (~35 km). From there, take a taxi to Mussoorie and then to Landour.
- By train: Dehradun Railway Station is the closest major railhead.
- By road: Landour is well-connected by taxi or shared jeep from Dehradun and Mussoorie. Once in Landour, walking is the best way to explore.
Things to Do in Landour
1. Walk the Chakkars
The Upper, Middle, and Lower Chakkars are circular walking paths that form the classic Landour experience. The Upper Chakkar (often called Gol Chakkar) loops past key sights and offers Himalayan views, old cottages, and quiet forest stretches.

2. Visit Kellogg’s Memorial Church
At the junction where the road forms a figure-eight stands Kellogg’s Memorial Church, a Gothic-style church built in 1903. Next to it is the Landour Language School, where British officers once learned local languages; today, you can still enrol for Hindi or Urdu classes.

3. Explore Char Dukaan (Char Dukan)
Char Dukaan means “four shops,” and this tiny cluster has been a favourite hangout for decades. Grab Maggi, pakoras, parathas, pancakes, or shakes while enjoying mountain views and a laid-back vibe.

4. Stop at Sisters Bazaar, Landour Bakehouse & Prakash Stores
A short walk away is Sisters Bazaar, a small market named after nurses from the old army hospital. Here you’ll find:
- Landour Bakehouse: Known for fresh pastries, brownies, coffee, and hot chocolate in a cosy, rustic setting.
- Prakash Stores: Famous for homemade cheese, peanut butter, jams, and other local goodies—great for souvenirs.

5. Head to Lal Tibba
Less than a kilometre uphill from Kellogg’s Church is Lal Tibba, the highest point in the Mussoorie–Landour area (around 7,464 feet). It’s a popular spot for panoramic views of the Himalayas and, in winter, the striking “Winter Line” sunset.

6. Hike in Jabarkhet Nature Reserve
For nature lovers, the Jabarkhet Nature Reserve is a privately managed forest with marked trails, deer, birds, and dense oak–rhododendron forest. You can hike independently with a trail map or book a guided walk in advance.

7. Soak in the Heritage
Stroll through the cantonment area to spot old colonial bungalows, St. Paul’s Church (one of Landour’s oldest churches), and quiet lanes lined with deodars. A slow heritage walk is one of the most rewarding ways to experience the town.

Where to Stay
Landour has a range of options from heritage homestays and boutique cottages to budget guesthouses and campsites. Many properties are tucked into the forest, offering views, bonfires, and a very local feel. Booking in advance is wise during peak season (April–June, October–November).

Practical Tips
- Dress in layers: Mornings and evenings can be chilly even in summer.
- Carry cash: Smaller shops and some cafés may not accept cards.
- Respect the cantonment: Landour is a military area; follow local rules, avoid restricted zones, and keep noise down.
- Travel light: The best way to explore is on foot, so comfortable shoes are essential.
A Simple Landour Itinerary (2 Days)
Day 1: Arrive from Dehradun/Mussoorie → Check in → Walk the Upper Chakkar → Visit Kellogg’s Church → Sunset at Lal Tibba → Dinner at Char Dukaan.
Day 2: Morning hike in Jabarkhet → Explore Sisters Bazaar, Bakehouse, and Prakash Stores → Stroll through the cantonment and St. Paul’s Church → Depart.

Landour rewards slow travel: long walks, quiet cafés, forest air, and views that change with the light. If you’re looking for a hill station that feels more like a retreat than a tourist spot, Landour is an ideal choice. Hiaxe
